The Facts & Challenges
Transportation is the fastest-growing end-use sector for emissions. Transport emissions grew nearly 1.7% annually in the last 20 years. This is a faster rate than any other sector. In addition, the transport industry depends on petroleum products for 91% of its energy consumption. In fact, in Europe, the trucking industry generates 15% of the continent’s emissions. Because of this, the sector must reduce its emissions by 3% annually by 2030, reducing to less than 6 Gt by 2030.
To achieve this target, the industry needs to adopt sustainable mobility solutions. One of the biggest challenges is to lighten the carbon footprint of heavy cargo transport. While electrical trucks are already a reality, heavy cargo hasn’t made the shift yet. There are already projects going on, like the battery-electric ready-mix trucks commissioned by Cemex. However, according to WEF, to electrify its fleet, Cemex loses 2t of concrete per delivery.
Evidently, innovation for the electrification of heavy cargo is needed. Besides this, charging infrastructure is also critical to electric mobility in the logistics industry. Roadside charging options are needed for long-haul road freight beyond a range of 250 miles. Further investment in infrastructure and fiscal incentives is necessary to increase demand and reduce costs.
